About Kenneth Maier

Kenneth worked for Allstate Insurance Company for over 20 years as a Director in Accounting and Finance. He started handicapping thoroughbred racehorses to occupy his time when an injury forced him to give up serious marathon running, after running 2:29 in the 1981 Boston Marathon at the age of 21. Kenneth was fourth of over 700 participants in the 2008 Coast Casinos Handicapping World Series Championship and 5th in both the 2007 and 2010 Summer Classic contest held every year in Las Vegas. The enjoyment of handicapping and attending the races led Kenneth to enter the horse business, buying his first racehorse with three friends for a total purchase price of $6,000. The horse, named Courtlite, won her first race by six lengths and he was hooked.

Kenneth continued owning horses, purchased mainly through private sale and the claim box. As his interest in the "Sport of Kings" grew, he began to regularly attend horse auctions, including the Keeneland fall yearling and the Ocala Breeders' two-year-old in training sales. He then began an intense study of pedigree and confirmation and started attending sales with professional pinhookers to learn more about purchasing horses at auction. In 2001, Kenneth decided to start buying thoroughbreds on his own. He went to the October Keeneland sale and purchased his first horse at auction for $35,000. The horse was a Formal Gold colt named Formal Decree (see pictures below).

Kenneth continues to have the same passion for the game today that he did when he first started in the business 17 years ago. He is now seeking to help others enjoy the thrill of thoroughbred horseracing in a fiscally responsible manner. Kenneth can help you buy horses, select a trainer, purchase horses for resale, or provide breeding advice. With the advent of polytrack, Maier Bloodstock believes pedigree has become a more prominent factor in choosing a horse if you plan to race in states with a synthetic surface. A list of all Kenneth's auction purchases and their racing success is shown here. In addition, Kenneth believes the welfare of the horse is paramount and donates 10% of all revenue Maier Bloodstock earns to various thoroughbred retirement charities to make sure these noble warriors are taken care of when their racing career is over. Please contact Kenneth at (847) 331-4235 to discuss your goals in thoroughbred racing and see if he can help make your dreams a reality.
